I’m a big believer in the mock oral. For a lot of pilots, it can be just the confidence boost that they need to go into their checkride feeling prepared and ready to go. I’ve done dozens of mock orals from Private Pilot through CFI checkrides and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to start offering virtual mock orals for aviators all over the country.
What is a mock oral?
A mock oral is a “dry-run” of the oral examination that proceeds the flight portion of a practical exam. It is usually done with an instructor that you have no prior experience with to best simulate talking with a DPE as well as to get an unbiased opinion as to what your strengths and weaknesses are.
What is the process like?
If you are interested in doing a mock oral, start by filling out the contact form on my website. From there I will reach out, find out more about what your goals are, and send you a link to pay for the session. Then we schedule a time and meet via Zoom and begin the oral exam.
Just like the actual oral exam, we will then proceed to go through the Airmen Certification Standards (ACS) and I will ask you a variety of scenario-based questions. If you have a scenario given to you by your DPE (i.e plan a cross country flight from xxx to xxx) then we will use that scenario to base the questions around. If you don’t have one, I will assign one prior to our meeting.
Once we go through the questions, I will provide you with an annotated copy of the ACS that references the official FAA documentation that you can use for studying and preparing for your actual oral exam. Additionally, I will send you a follow-up report that outlines some of your strengths, areas to work on, and overall tips for the checkride.
The entire mock oral process usually takes around three hours. While that may seem rather lengthy, it’s designed such that we can really drill down into the ACS so that you can walk away confident that you are ready for the checkride (or at least aware of those areas you will want to study up on).
The cost for the mock oral is $200 USD for Private, Instrument, and Commercial checkrides.
